All of us at times have tight muscles. This can be caused by many factors including stress and tension. One of the best ways to reduce this is by doing meditation. Also there are many other things that you can do for your self. You can receive a massage which is very theraputic on many levels.
Do you know that you can do things for yourself including self massage? Plus many modalities that you can do for your own self to relieve tension and even headache stress. Which this type is targeted into the muscles.
Why should you receive a massage?
When the person is diagnosed from a Physician muscular massage therapy can be beneficial to many. Different types of massage therapy can assist the person in decreasing or as a preventative therapy. Massage therapy is very relaxing to the person that is receiving it.
Recent scientific research also proves that massage therapy increases immune function, decreases stress levels and reduces recovery time in many medical conditions including:
Allergies
Depression and Anxiety
Arthritis
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Asthma and Bronchitis
Circulatory Problems
Insomnia
Sports Injuries
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Musculo-Skeletal Disorders
Receiving massage therapy on a regular basis can for some individuals:
Relieve stress
Encourage relaxation
Improve posture
Improve circulation
Help in managing pain
Relaxing muscles
Improve flexibility and range of motion
Alleviate discomfort during pregnancy
Assisting in the release of tension related headaches
Enhance post operative rehabilitation
Improve rehabilitation after injury
Trigger point therapy can also be affective treatment. Some may have heard of this as pressure points. Throughout our entire body we have certain areas that have trigger points to release the muscle when it is in spasm or tight. These certain spots within the body when pressed for some can lessen the pain or pressure of the headache. The area is pressed and then released in a slow and massaged to gain relief. This will release the congested energy .
The base of the skull also called the occipital ridge is where the muscles that do attach to this area do get tight. The Levator Scapulae is attached to this area. The use of pressure point therapy and massage in this area can be at times beneficial to the client. It is found on the bony base of the skull in the back of the head. The pressure point is about one inch from each side of the spinal column. Placing pressure to this area with the pads of the thumb. Then with tiny circular motions with the thumbs and still holding some pressure. When you notice change in point of loosing then the pressure is released . This is something that every one can do. Self massage is wonderful to do especially if you do get tight neck muscles and the base of the skull gets tight. - great time to do this is in the shower when washing your hair give yourself a head massage.
Also is another point on the neck is called the SCM - Sternocleidomastoid Muscle. It is located toward the front of the neck. This is usually affected by whiplash.
Other points are in the middle of the eyebrows, by each eye corners - from the outer corners of the eyes, move your fingers until you find the spots just behind the bone - please note softer pressure is done here with either index fingers or third fingers with circular motion.
The other point is easy for all of us to do is on each hand. This is between the thumb and index finger on each hand. It is the fleshy part. When a person does have a headache or tends to get them frequently you will find this point usually tight and or sore. If you do this for yourself with the opposite hand grab this point with the index and thumb and squeeze until you feel the point release its pressure. Usually this is best done when someone else does this to you, then you can tell them how much pressure you can with stand and then respond to them when the pressure/feeling is released. This is also a point on the feet - on the top between the big toe and the second toe.
Other types of therapies to assist individuals in the relief of stress and tension - but always to remember to find the cause of the headaches, stress and tension. A medical doctor is always the first you should advise.
Acupressure - about the same as I wrote above with the pressure points. Certain areas of the body that are also associated with acupuncture can be worked with pressure from the thumbs and or forefingers.
Essential oils - the use of essential oils have been used for thousands of years. By mixing essential oils with a base carrier; oil, lotion or cream and massaging into the body can assist in relaxation of the body on many levels. The only oil that can be directly put on the body is lavender and tea tree other oils used must be added to a base carrier - rule of thumb 7 - 10 drops total of an essential oil to one ounce of a carrier base. Now you can find out on the bottles of essential oils what is safe to use and not for different kind of physical conditions.
List of oils that are associated in calming and soothing: (just to name a few)
Lavender Cedar wood Patchouli Sandalwood Black spruce
Some other therapies that I do that my clients have receive great benefit from when they come to me with stress and tension:
Reiki Cranio sacral therapy Guided Imagery Meditation Deep Breathing techniques
Massage therapy is safe and effective if used for stress management but it is also widely used to help patients obtain relief from many specific problems.
